a judging technique

Herman L. Felton shares an abc for judging dogs and an alternate technique for examining a class of dogs. He shares that during decades of judging purebred dogs, this is a philosophy and a technique that he is very comfortable with and which best enabled him to fulfill his good judging criteria. ... a Canine Chronicle reprint from Feb., 1997.

the way a terrier moves ...

"It did my heart good to watch most of the Terrier judging and see how the pendulum is coming around and see judges paying great attention to movement." In this article, Rick Chashoudian discusses Terrier movement and some of his frustrations with judges who misunderstand Terrier movement, for example, Rick goes on to say, "I was at a Montgomery show about five years ago and a man high up at A.K.C. was walking down the main aisle between two tents and was passing by me. He looked at me and said, “Well, here I am at the Montgomery County Terrier Show where all of the dogs walk like this.” He held up his index finger and middle finger and moved them about half an inch back and forth stiffly. This misconception about Terrier movement could not be further from the way it should be. I was a little angry that someone that held a position close to the top at the Kennel Club would make a statement like that. Terriers should be one of the soundest breeds of dogs there are and unfortunately some that are stiff moving but beautiful on the stand have been seen winning and this is wrong in my opinion."

what was that noise?

I sat straight up in bed, 5:54 am. What was that noise? Will I hear it again? Some sort of loud cough, or snort, or something from the general vicinity of MacGyver’s dog bed at the foot of our own bed had awakened me. Was he okay? For those of you that know MacGyver, he is eleven and a lot years old. So okay, you worry, and you pay attention.
Then I heard it again, the unabashed snarfling, rubbing and the low pleasure sounds that an experienced pleasure-seeker like MacGyver makes when he takes time out for a slow “lay on your back and scratch everything” backrub. I heard (and truth be told enjoyed) every sound as he pushed his frame along the surface of the carpet.
The smile spread slowly across my face as I lay back down and thought, “thank God for old dogs!”
